VEOLIA was founded in 1853 in France as a company dedicated to designing and providing groundbreaking, practical solutions for water, waste, and energy management. Initially named Compagnie Générale des Eaux under the decree of Emperor Napoleon III, the company changed its name in 1998 to Vivendi Environment and then to Veolia Environment in 2003. Today, VEOLIA operates under several key brands: Veolia Water, Veolia Environmental Services, and Veolia Energy. In 2021, Veolia reached a historic agreement to merge with SUEZ, the world’s largest private water company and a leader in waste recycling and recovery.

By 2023, VEOLIA employed nearly 218,000 people globally, providing drinking water services to 113 million people, wastewater treatment services to 103 million people, generating 42 terawatt-hours of energy, and recovering 63 million tons of waste annually.

It was a division of General Electric (GE), founded in 1892 in the United States, with over 130 years of experience in energy, aerospace, and healthcare sectors.
